It's 2024 y'all...are you ready? January is the perfect time to map out a big year for yourself. If it means traveling, start picking your dates. What do you have too lose. If you are like me, you will want to see when deadlines are popping up for different exhibition opportunities as well as grants. I also run This is Happening with plans to host monthly pop-ups and 2-3 major events throughout the year. So, it's best you do your best to plan as much as possible. And it's winter time so many happenings are indoors because of the weather. Plan for that as well. Trust me, the more you are prepared the better your year will be.
Studio cleaning and organization is a wonderful way to start the new year. Give yourself a weekend and really put in the effort to revitalize your creative space. So much so, that you have a fresh new studio to work in. That way, when new projects start to materialize, you are ready my friend. Having a clean and organized studio will help you know what you have and don't have as far as art supplies goes. Maybe you didn't realize you have 3 tubes of red paint that you thought you didn't have. Or sometimes you might find a unused canvas to paint on. The wonders of a clean and organized studio are important for your career as an artist. So do it already!
Finally, I believe view all possibilities with your artwork at the start of the year. It is fine to carry over projects from the year before, but honestly, I believe in a fresh start to the new year. I am currently reading "The Creative Act: A Way of Being" by Rick Ruben. From Mr. Ruben's perspective that ideas that are the strongest are general the ones that shine the brightest in your mind. So maybe you had something burning inside you last year but couldin't find the time to allow this idea to materialize. Don't worry, the start of the new year is a perfect time to act upon this feeling. So go for it!
